There’s a concept from Seth Godin, Tedster and marketing marvel, of the “purple cow.” Every day we only see white and black cows, their colors never change and they become easily ignored by the bulk of us. However, what if one day we were driving down the road and standing off to the side in a pasture just minding his own business, a purple cow! We might stop and stare, at the very least we’d take a moment to wrap our heads around what we just saw, but most importantly we would remember that time we saw a purple cow, and what a story that would be!

And that’s the key. The goal is to create that exciting purple cow story around your company, its products, and its services. Work towards finding what part of your company offers value to the lives of others and create a story to showcase that impact.

Often times small companies, large businesses, or sole proprietors ask themselves the all too common question “why do I need design?” Some part of them knows that in order to keep up in this information intensive world they need a website, or a logo, or an advertisement to spread the word about their services, but that very basic question still lingers out there, “why do I need design?” And its subsequent questions “can’t I do it myself?” and “why should I spend the money for something like this?” The simple answer is that when you invest in design you are investing in the future success of your company.

Design is the process in which we make the useful beautiful, relevant, and relatable. Tom Peter’s, one of the most well respected business consultants anywhere, advises companies “Design is the difference between love and hate.” Another way to look at this is to say, Design is the difference between customers loving you or hating you.

With so many companies offering so many similar products and services, design is what makes your product and service beautiful, relevant, relatable, and loved by customers.
